Young People Say “Stop” to Food Waste: “Youth in Action for Food Waste Reduction” Completes in Vienna!
Vienna, the capital of Austria, hosted a project by young change-makers from 5 different countries to combat food waste.
Inspired by Vienna’s pioneering vision for sustainability, the “YOUTH IN ACTION FOR FOOD WASTE REDUCTION” project successfully concluded after an intense and productive week. 35 young participants from Austria, Turkey, Bulgaria, Latvia, and Hungary came together to reduce food waste, protect ecological balance, and raise social awareness.
🍎 From Waste to the Future: Young People’s Vienna Offensive
Based on the fact that an average of 132 kg of food per person is wasted annually in Europe, the project not only provided young people with theoretical knowledge but also made them part of the solution. Throughout the week, participants:
Trackled food loss in local markets and kitchens by conducting “Waste Watch” on the streets of Vienna.
In Green Spark Lab workshops, they proved that “waste can be transformed into a legacy” by turning organic waste into innovative products.
In line with the spirit of Erasmus+, they studied successful models such as Austria’s “Food is Valuable!” (Lebensmittel sind kostbar!) and prepared adaptation plans for their own countries.
🎭 Art and Data Together
One of the most striking moments of the project was the “EcoStage” performances, where collected data was transformed into art. Young people explained the link between food waste and climate change to the people of Vienna through original songs, videos, and public space activations.
🚀 Change Begins Now!
Although the mobility in Vienna has ended, the impact of the project is just beginning. Participants returned to their countries with “Local Action Plans” and collaboration networks that they will implement in their schools and youth centers.
Note from the Project Team:
“Food waste isn’t just throwing away a meal; it’s stealing from our future. This green torch we lit in Vienna will continue to grow in 5 countries with the daily choices of young people!”
